How to Avoid Excessive Dry Skin?

Winter is over but your dry skin problem isn’t? I feel your pain. Dry skin is a problem usually associated with winters due to the change in climatic conditions around us. The air around us is dry with less humidity which causes the upper layer of the skin to become dry and chapped. It is a condition faced by many.

But now that winters are getting over and we are moving towards warmer springs, this problem should naturally perish. Right? Well, that’s what I thought. To my surprise it didn’t. Even though the temperatures are rising, the cold and dry air still lingers sucking the moisture out of your skin and making it dry as a raisin.

What‘s the solution?

Here are a few things which you can do to avoid getting dry skin.

1. Avoid hot showers or baths.

If you have dry skin, it is important that you switch from hot to warm/cold showers. Hot water strips your skin off its natural oils and causes dryness.

Tempting as it is, it’s best to avoid hot water for your skin’s sake.

Limit your bath time to a minimum of 5 to 10 minutes.

Use mild fragrance-free soaps or bodywashs like Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar or The Body Shop Shower Gels which are soap-free.

2. Moisturise heavily

Moisturising is vital to keep the moisture locked in the skin. You should immediately moisturise the skin once you are out of the shower to avoid water loss from the skin’s surface, thus resulting in dryness.

There are three category of ingredients which help in maintaining the moisture in your skin, namely occlusives, humectants & emollients.

Emollients like linoleic acid and lauric acids fill in the space between your skin cells to create a smooth and even texture. Humectants attract moisture from the air into your skin to keep it hydrated like hyaluronic acid & glycerin. Occlusives are ingredients which keep the moisture locked in and doesn’t allow it to escape the skin’s surface, it includes petroleum jelly, mineral oils or silicone.

Choose products that are rich in these key ingredients like Vaseline, Cetaphil moisturiser, CeraVe or Nivea.

The same applies for your face too. Since the skin in your face is more sensitive than your body, it is essential you pick a product that suits your needs.

Dry skin can also cause acne, so if you have acne prone skin, make sure you moisture it without fail.

Products in serum or cream form are best suited to boost hydration. Try products like Moisture surge by Clinique or Hyaluronic acid 2% by The Ordinary. If this doesn’t fit your budget, try Cetaphil face moisturiser or Nivea’s nourishing face cream.

Avoid alcohol-based products because they can dry out the skin.

3. Dry Brushing

I know it sounds counter-productive to include an exfoliation technique as a measure to combat dry skin. But hear me out.

Dry Brushing is an Ayurvedic technique used to remove dead skin and toxins from your body. A dry brush is made out of natural fibre bristles which helps drain the lymphatic system.

It helps in exfoliating the skin by removing all the accumulated dead cells, thus helping you with the dry skin problem.

Start by using it before you jump into shower. Do it in small circular motions towards your heart.

Don’t overdo it, start with twice a week and see how your body reacts to it.

Disclaimer : Avoid using dry brushing, if you have open wounds, inflamed skin, rashes or any other medical conditions like psoriasis, eczema etc.

4. Hydrate your body

Dry skin problems can also arise from a dehydrated body. Replenish your body by drinking lots of fluids which will help hydrate it from the inside.

As much as you take care of the outside, if your body does not have enough water internally, it can leave your skin dry & parched.

As recommended, drink atleast 2 litres or 8 glasses of water daily. Non-alcoholic drinks like tea, coffee, fruit juices also counts.

If you can’t manage to drink that much fluid on a daily basis, try including water rich foods in your diet like cucumbers, watermelon, oranges, tomatoes etc.

5. Use hypoallergenic cleaning liquids.

It is common knowledge that almost all our washing products contain toxins and irritants that are not skin-friendly. It may cause rashes, irritation, backacne and dry skin in many people.

When you wear skin-hugging, tight clothes or materials like wool which are abrasive, it can trigger irritations & dry skin. Resulting in a unpleasant trail of flaky white residue over all your clothes. Try wearing loose, airy clothes made from natural fibres like cotton.

To avoid skin problems, use detergents that are hypoallergenic and toxin free or made with natural ingredients like plant enzymes.

6. Overnight treatments

Night is the time your body heals and repairs itself, hence, it’s the best time to do some damage control.

Lather on that Vaseline Intensive care or The Body Shop’s Shea butter over your body to smooth out the dry skin and retain moisture.
